Posted by admin on Sunday, February 22nd, 2009

The funding and qualifications for the AFG vary each year. For the fiscal year of 2008, which ends September 30, 2009, the US Congress allocated $560 million to the AFG.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security was assigned the task of distributing the free federal grant money. Since most areas overlap each other there was no area set as a priority over another. A partial distribution of funds, as directed by congress, are as follows;

* Up to 5% for program administration
* Up to 2% for awards to non-affiliated EMS organizations.
* Not more than 25% to be used for the purchase of vehicles
* No less than 3.5% for equipment and training for EMS.
* No less than 5% for fire prevention activities.
* No less than 0.5% to foam and foam related equipment.
* No more than 45 % for career departments.

Another directive by congress is to ensure that the percentage of population protected by volunteer and combination departments receive the same or greater percentage of total funding from the AFG program.

* No less than 33% to combination (comprised of both paid and volunteer firefighters) organization
* No less than 22 % to all volunteer organizations.

The last directive by congress limits AFG amounts by population of protected areas.

* Population areas with 500,000 people or less can only receive grants up to $1,000,000.
* Population areas between 500,000 and 1,000,000 can only receive grants up to $1,750,000.
* Population areas exceeding 1,000,000 people can only receive grants up to $2,750,000.
