Evaluation Process of an Application for an AFG Award Part II

Posted by admin on Monday, March 16th, 2009

This article is a continuation of the application review process for the AFG Fire Grants awards.

The individual merits of each application are the only consideration of the panelist. The applications are not in a contest with each other and are therefore individually judged. Proposing a cost-effective project is one of the elements the panelists are looking for when analyzing each application. There are three areas a project description will help the panelists determine this value, they are;
1) Be beneficial to the surrounding community and region;
2) Improve the communication of the different departments of the state following the certified approved plan by the DHS for the state;
3) Help organizations that are first responders when involved in hazardous situations or natural disasters;

Each application will be reviewed in its entirety and judged on the established criteria.

A representative from each state will assist with technical review of the peer-reviewed applications process. This is to help evaluate the communication request and ensure they follow the preset criteria by the DHS. After their review, a representative of the state homeland security office will review the application to evaluate if the application conforms to the state’s SCIP.

For the applications that have not met the set criteria and are not approved, there is still hope. If the applicant’s area of protection includes a critical infrastructure or key resource, then this issue will be reviewed on this merit and could still receive approval.

As you can see, there are many steps to the review and approval process. When writing your application, remember that the review panelists are Americans too. Get them to feel your need. This will help your application to pass and your department to receive an award from the AFG program.
