Who Are Eligible Applicants for an AFG Grant?
Applicants that are eligible for the free grant money from the AFG program must operate their fire department or non-affiliated EMS organization from any of the 50 states or the District of Columbia.
Also included for eligibility are the commonwealths of the Virgin Islands, the Northern Mariana Islands, and the U.S. territories of Puerto Rico, Guam and American Samoa.
The definition of a “fire department”, as defined by the Department of Homeland Security for the purpose of AFG, is as follows:
An agency or organization that is formally recognized by the state, territory, local or tribal authority to provide fire suppression services for the population of a specified geographical area on a first-due basis (DHS 2008).
The definition of a “non-affiliated EMS organization”, as defined by the Department of Homeland Security for the purpose of AFG, is as follows:
A public or private nonprofit emergency medical service organization that gives direct emergency medical services and transportation in a specified area not adequately provided by a fire department. This is on a first-due basis and the organization cannot be affiliated with a hospital (DHS 2008).
The definition of “adequately providing”, as defined by the Department of Homeland Security for the purpose of AFG in determining their eligibility that uses it in association with non-affiliated EMS organization, is as follows:
At the time of the applicant’s submission, direct medical services supplied by the EMS organization is licensed or charted to provide said services and is in good standings with the community.
Also eligible to apply are rescue squads that provide direct emergency medical services (DHS 2008).
The definition of “affiliated”, as defined by the Department of Homeland Security for the purpose of AFG, is a follows:
An organization that receives any kind of direct support from a hospital including funding, staff, equipment, facilities or apparatus is considered affiliated. (DHS 2008).
The definition of “hospital”, as defined by the Department of Homeland Security, is a follows:
An organization, clinic, medical center, medical college or university, infirmary, surgery center or any other institution, association, or foundation that provides medical, surgical and/or psychiatric care and treatment for the sick or injured (DHS 2008).
