Is Diesel Exhaust a Pollutant?

Posted by admin on Friday, February 27th, 2009

Is diesel exhaust a pollutant? Does it harm you? Does it damage your lungs? According to the American Cancer Society the answer to all three of these questions is yes.

The health concerns are not only cancer, but respiratory and heart disease. Diesel exhaust is all around us from buses, trains, large and small truck, and construction and farm equipment. For the people at Ward Diesel, the firefighter’s lungs are an area of great concern.

Without the lungs of the people that are dedicated to saving our lives in time of need being fully functional, more people would perish.

Diesel exhaust is composed of not only the visible soot but also invisible gases that can harm not only your lungs but also you’re over all health.  Inhalation is the method of exposure for humans. With many harmful gases including carbon monoxide, nitric oxide, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH’s), your body does not know or see it coming until the coughing reaction by the lungs start.

With the soot, one can see the pollutants that include trace metals, carbon and once again PAH’s. the soot is easier to avoid but for the firefighter in an enclosed station, every emergency response causes exposure with the start of the engine.

There is no time or thought from them about their health. The firefighter just reacts to the emergency situation and responds to the call. This is the reason the people at Ward Diesel developed the No Smoke and No smoke 2 with a built in timer mechanism. These two devices filter out the harmful diesel exhaust that protects the people that protect us.

The Ward Diesel AFG Grants department will also help you with your grant application.
