Things you should know when applying for AFG
There are a number of things to consider when developing your approach to winning an award from the AFG program. Remember, this is a free federal governmental grant that is open to qualifying organization in the country. Since the funds for this program are limited each year and the need surpasses this amount allocated by the government, give your application the best chance of success, do your research.
As applicants, you know your needs but have you thought about what would benefit the community around you the best? Remember, you service a whole community. The larger the area a project covers, the better chance of approval. The more people that will benefit in a cost effective way, the better the chance your application has of passing the approval process.
Keep in mind that a narrative is part of the application process. You might want to consider a professional writer. There are professional writers that make a living at being persuasive. That is what your narrative needs to be – very persuasive but honest. Two or more people should also review the general questions that are in the application – one of which should not be connected to your department. An outsider’s point of view might see things in a different light and assist in improving your application.
Another consideration is the involvement of your federal representatives. Senators and congressmen make a living out of receiving public funding and persuading others to see their cause as they wish them to view it. There are many incidents where they have influenced the outcome of the approval process for a positive result. The reason they were elected to their office was to serve their community. Helping your department is part of their job description, so utilize this resource.
Most of all, be honest. If your department or organization receives an award, use the award for what it is intended. The bottom line is to save as many lives and property as possible while protecting yourselves. Always remember this as your guiding principle.
