How to use your AFG Grants Allocation to Improve the Life of your Firefighter

Posted by admin on Monday, February 23rd, 2009

For the past 5 years, from 2004 to 2008, the number of applications for the AFG program for free federal grants money has stayed relatively consistent – somewhere between 18,171 and 21,015.  You can use your AFG Grant Allocation to Improve the Life of Your Firefighter.

In that 5 year time period the amount of the average federal share of each grant has increased from $113,149 to $152,864. With each fire department and fire district understanding the process better they are becoming better equipped. This includes new vehicle purchases and equipment to make them safer to use.

For the year 2008, there were 7,909 applications involving the purchase of new vehicles for use in addressing emergency situations. These only accounted for 37.6% of all applications but received 60.7% of the AFG Grant Allocation. That is $1,949,354,449 spent on vehicles, most of which will have diesel engines used in the larger trucks.

The lives and health of the firefighter is of the utmost importance. They have to stay focused and not be distracted to perform at peak efficiency in a job that exposes them to great life and death situations.

This was one of the reasons that the NO SMOKE systems at Ward Diesel were developed. By making it easier and safer for a firefighter to breath, they can concentrate on the dangerous job of handling the emergency.

The diesel engines produce black soot and gases, especially on start up. The Ward Diesel NO SMOKE and NO SMOKE 2 systems will reduce this and ensure your firefighters are not exposed to potentially dangerous smoke unnecessarily.

This modification can be included in your application for funding of your new vehicle funded by the AFG program.
