The AFG Application Process is Highly Competitive

Posted by admin on Sunday, February 22nd, 2009

The Assistance to Firefighters Grants or AFG is a source of funds allocated by congress to help maintain existing firefighting facilities and their vehicles. It is also an additional source of free grant money to provide new vehicles and equipment for the local firehouses across the United States and its territories.

The majority of requests in 2008 for homeland security funding came from fire departments and fire districts. There were other requests that come from regional fire agencies and non-affiliated EMS organizations.

Last year alone there were 21,015 requests for federal grant money submitted to AFG. The total amount of free governmental grant money requested was $3,212,426,732. The average federal share per fire department application was $152,884. Did your department get its share?

Since 2001, AFG from FEMA has supplied the funding to assist firefighters, rescue personnel and first responders with the required equipment, including exhaust removal systems, training and necessary resources to better prepare them for emergency situations. Since the need is great and the funding limited, a properly written grant application is crucial for it to be successful.

This funding is authorized through 2010, at which time congress would have to reauthorize this grant program again. To ensure you receive the necessary funding your department needs, a properly written application needs to be submitted before the deadline.
