Additional Eligible Participants and Factors of Ineligibility for Fire Grants
If an organization or fire department does not possess the legal standing to file an application for Fire Grants, the local municipality or fire district where it is located in may submit the application for free federal grants under the AFG program.
For native villages in Alaska, applications may be submitted by the state because of the Alaska Village Initiative.
The AFG has three types of applications for three separate purposes – vehicle acquisition program, operations and safety program, and regional projects. Only one application for each type is permissible. If an applicant applies with two or more applications of the same type, the DHS will consider all applications ineligible.
To help cover the widest area with help, the DHS has also decided that even if two separate organizations occupy the same facility they are going to be considered as one organization. Joint applications must be filed. If two or more applications are filed in the same program or type area, then all applications will be considered ineligible.
Affiliated EMS may have their fire departments file applications for them but it must be as a fire department. If an affiliated EMS unit files an application as a non-affiliated EMS organization, the application will be considered ineligible. The same goes for a non-affiliated EMS organization that files as a fire department. All applications will be considered ineligible.
Private or non-federal airport and port authorities, and their EMS organizations are only eligible for the AFG funds if there is a formal agreement with the local community to provide fire suppression or emergency medical services to the community outside the confines of their facilities.
The AFG Fire Grants program is vital to your community. You will succeed by following the rules. We are here to help you do that.
